| FORMER CHP OFFICER ON TRIAL FOR ALLEGED SEX CRIME WITH A MINOR |
Trial is underway at the Santa Ana Courthouse in the case of a former CHP lieutenant accused of attempted lewd act with a child under 14.
According to prosecutors, in 2006, the defendant sent sexually explicit Internet chat room messages to an undercover officer, whom he believed was a 13-year-old girl, and then drove 45 minutes to meet the girl at a park in Laguna Beach. He was arrested as a part of a sting operation orchestrated by PervertedJustice.com.
The defense attorney claims a not guilty verdict should be rendered because the defendant did not have the intent to engage in a sexual act with a child. Prosecutors, however, argued intent was present in the fact the defendant arrived at the park with numerous condoms.
If convicted, the defendant may receive up to four years in prison and be required to register as a sex offender for life. |
